Blocked in by another car: safe ways to get help

· Updated · Checked

If another car traps you in a hotel, supermarket, workplace or residential car park, start with the people managing that site. Give reception, security or the parking office the blocking car’s plate and the exact bay, aisle or exit ramp. Ask them to contact the driver or make an announcement.

Do not squeeze through a gap you cannot judge safely. Keep clear of moving vehicles and leave room for the other driver to return and manoeuvre.

If the obstruction is across your driveway or affects access to your property, use the UK driveway and property-access guide. This guide covers getting out of a managed parking area.

Show staff where you are trapped

  1. Photograph the blocking car, its plate and the space you need to leave.
  2. Record the time, parking level, bay and nearest entrance or lift.
  3. Check for a displayed number or clearly marked driver-contact QR.
  4. Give staff the full plate, car description and your location.
  5. Ask what the site’s procedure is if the driver cannot be found.

Tell staff whether the car blocks your individual bay, the aisle or the whole exit. A photograph of the wider scene is more useful than a close-up of the plate alone. Keep your parking ticket or booking details available if staff need to identify your stay.

For an allocated residential space, the Metropolitan Police guidance directs tenants to the person responsible for the building, such as its freeholder or managing agent. That is a useful starting point for a managed development; the site can explain its own procedure.

Make one clear request

A displayed number lets you try a call. If you find the driver, explain what you need and give them space to move. Keep a message factual:

Your car is blocking bay 24 on level B2, beside lift C. I need to leave. Could you come and move it?

If you scan a contact QR, check the service and vehicle before entering details. Follow the owner’s contact route. A code that opens a phone call and one that opens an app have different steps.

With Replyte, open the app, choose the issuing country and enter the complete plate. Select Blocking me in and describe the bay or exit. You can add a photo or location without either participant receiving the other’s phone number.

An eligible message to an unclaimed plate waits for up to 30 days. It reaches a recipient only if the plate is claimed before expiry; otherwise it expires. Keep working with staff when the exit needs clearing now; a sent message does not guarantee a reply.

If the driver cannot be found

Return to reception, security or the parking operator with the location and time. Ask what action they can take and whether they need you to remain nearby. Do not assume that you can authorise a tow because the vehicle is in your way.

Call 999 for immediate danger. For a non-emergency police matter, GOV.UK lists 101 and the relevant online services. Describe any threat, injury or dangerous obstruction rather than treating every parking delay as an emergency.

Do not push or damage the car, let its tyres down, or block it in retaliation. Do not publish personal details to encourage a confrontation. If the exchange becomes threatening, step away and contact the responsible service.

Once the exit is clear

Stand out of the vehicle’s path while it moves. Save your photographs and any report reference. For a repeated problem, give dated records to the site manager and ask how they can keep the bay, aisle or exit clear.

For future private contact, get Replyte from Google Play. The iOS app is not available yet.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first if a car blocks me in?

Record the obstruction, check for contact details and ask reception, security or the property manager to contact the driver. Do not attempt a manoeuvre unless you can see that there is enough space.

Can I have the blocking car towed?

Authority to remove a vehicle depends on the jurisdiction, location and circumstances. Ask the parking operator or responsible authority before arranging a tow.

Will a plate message make the driver return immediately?

No. The sender needs the app. An eligible message to an unclaimed plate waits for up to 30 days and expires unless the owner claims it within that window. A reply is not guaranteed.
