How to contact a driver by number plate in the UK
· Checked
To ask a driver to move a car, close a window or check their lights, start with a contact route beside the vehicle. Use a displayed number, ask staff to pass on a request, or send a private message addressed to the number plate. You do not need to find the driver’s name first.
Choose the route for your request
| Route | When it helps | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Reception, security or the parking operator | The driver may still be inside the premises | Full plate, vehicle description and exact bay or entrance |
| Displayed phone number | The owner has left a direct contact route | One clear explanation of the location and action needed |
| A note | The driver can respond after returning | A brief request and a contact route you are comfortable leaving visible |
| Vehicle contact QR | The car already displays an activated code | Check the service, vehicle and contact channel after scanning |
| Replyte | You want a private conversation using the car’s plate | Sender app, issuing country, complete plate and contact reason |
If access needs official action, use the driveway and property-access guide. If you are trapped inside a managed car park, start with the car-park blocked-exit steps. Call 999 for immediate danger.
Copy the whole registration
Read every character and choose the country that issued the plate. Do not guess an obscured letter or digit. A personalised, older or Northern Ireland registration may look different from a recent Great Britain mark; keep the complete mark as displayed.
Give nearby staff the plate, colour and precise location. Ask them to pass on your request rather than disclose a resident’s or guest’s details. The registered keeper, legal owner and person who parked the car can be different people.
Send a useful private message
- Open Replyte and choose the issuing country.
- Enter the complete plate and check the characters.
- Choose the reason for contact.
- State the location and what the driver needs to do.
For example:
Your car is blocking the delivery gate beside number 12. Please move it when safe.
A photo of the gate or a location message can help. Keep bystanders and unrelated personal details out of the image. You can also send a voice note. Neither participant receives the other’s phone number through the conversation.
The sender needs the app. An eligible message to an unclaimed plate waits for up to 30 days. It reaches a recipient only if the plate is claimed before expiry; otherwise it expires. A claimed recipient can receive messages without that wait, but a reply is not guaranteed.
Owners can choose accepted contact reasons and quiet hours for ordinary alerts; Something else remains available as a contact reason. Quiet hours affect alerts, while messages remain in the thread. Claiming a car and receiving a verified ownership badge are separate steps.
Notes and QR codes: check what becomes visible
A note works without an account, but the driver must return and find it. Anyone who reads a phone number on the paper can copy and use it later. The dashboard contact comparison explains that privacy choice.
For a contact QR, check whether it opens a call, browser form or app. The destination determines which details the other person sees. A claimed Replyte car can have a QR and printable PDF; scanning leads to opening or installing Replyte and continuing in the app. The QR contact comparison explains other setup and channel choices.
For your own cars, Garage keeps vehicle information together. Review co-driver options for shared access, or ask about Fleet for an organisation’s shared vehicle inbox.
When you need keeper information
A contact request and a formal records request serve different purposes. For a Great Britain vehicle, the DVLA process requires reasonable cause. Examples include finding responsibility for an accident or tracing the keeper of a vehicle on private land. Individuals use form V888 and apply by post.
Follow that process for an appropriate formal enquiry. Keeper details do not establish who drove, and a vehicle-history check is not a promise of a driver’s phone number. Check the information a service actually provides before paying for a search.
Before you rely on a contact service
Check that it identifies the complete registration and explains what happens before the recipient joins. Review which personal details each participant sees. A searchable profile or a reply is not proof of verified ownership.
If nobody answers, return to the parking operator or responsible local service. GOV.UK’s police contact page separates 999 emergencies from 101 and the online non-emergency services for each nation. A private message cannot dispatch help or arrange official removal.
After damage, follow the UK parked-car incident steps. A note, QR or private conversation does not replace required collision details or reporting.
