Car blocking your driveway in the US: what to do
If a car blocks your driveway, first check whether anyone is in danger. For a routine obstruction, try the driver’s displayed contact details or ask a nearby property manager. If that fails, use the parking-enforcement or police service for your address.
Do not squeeze past a car when you cannot see that there is enough room. A damaged mirror or a collision will make the situation harder to resolve.
Give the driver something they can act on
Include the location and the blocked entrance in one request: “Your car is across the driveway at 24 Oak Street. Please move it when safe.” A building name or photo can help when several entrances look alike.
If you use a phone number on the dashboard, keep the conversation about the obstruction. Do not threaten the driver or post their plate online.
Prepare an enforcement report
Record the street address, time, vehicle color, make, model, full plate and issuing state. Take a photo that shows the car and driveway together. Keep a separate close-up if the plate is hard to read in the wider image.
Find the official service for the city or county. There is no single national driveway-report form or towing sequence.
In New York City, NYC311 accepts blocked-driveway reports. Its page describes possible ticketing followed by towing and gives a separate 911 instruction for a vehicle illegally parked inside the actual private driveway. Follow that local distinction; another city’s process may differ.
For other emergencies, 911.gov explains when to call 911 and how to find local non-emergency contacts. Do not wait for a private reply during an emergency.
A message cannot order a tow
A US plate address needs the United States, the issuing state or territory and the complete plate.
The current Google Play app does not support plate contact for US, Canadian or Australian plates.
For supported plates, Replyte keeps phone numbers out of the conversation and requires the sender to use the app.
For supported plates, eligible messages to unclaimed plates wait up to 30 days and expire unless the plate is claimed. Even a delivered message does not guarantee a response. When access needs official intervention, continue with the local service rather than waiting for an account to appear.
On a managed lot, ask the operator what action they can take. Do not arrange removal on the assumption that every state permits the same procedure.
For a private request, see how to contact a driver in the US.
Get Replyte from Google Play. The iOS app is not available yet.
