Contact a driver by number plate in New Zealand

· Checked

You can try to contact a driver through a message addressed to a New Zealand number plate. That is different from finding the person’s phone number or looking up legal ownership. For a routine problem, choose a contact route and describe the action you need.

Read the plate before you send

Copy all the characters, then check them against the car again. Keep a personalised plate as shown rather than trying to turn it into an ordinary sequence. In Replyte, choose the country that issued the plate, even if you are contacting a visiting vehicle.

Look for an owner-installed contact sticker or displayed number. If the car is at a venue or managed parking area, ask staff whether they can make an announcement. They may help contact someone without giving you personal details.

NZTA explains that its register records the responsible registered person, rather than legal ownership. A registration also does not prove who parked or drove the vehicle.

That distinction matters if something has gone wrong. Keep your message about the observed problem, not a claim about someone’s identity or responsibility.

Send a useful private request

Install Replyte, enter the issuing country and plate, and choose a reason. For example:

“Your car is blocking the loading entrance on Queen Street. Please move it when safe.”

Text, a photo, a voice note or a location can help explain the situation. Phone numbers are not exchanged in the normal flow. Replyte does not obtain a driver’s number from NZTA.

The recipient still has to participate. An eligible message to an unclaimed plate waits for up to 30 days and expires unless the plate is claimed in that time. For your own claimed car, you can add a QR sticker or printable PDF so passers-by have another contact route.

When to use Police or parking services

Police reporting guidance separates 111 emergencies from 105 non-emergency matters. Parking administration usually needs the responsible council or property operator. A private message cannot issue a ticket or organise official removal.

If there is a crash, immediate danger or a road hazard, use the appropriate service first. Save the plate and observed facts for that report instead of waiting for someone to read a conversation.

If a request does not restore access, use the blocked-driveway guide. After damage, follow the parked-car incident steps.
