A car is blocking your driveway in New Zealand
· Checked
A car blocking your exit needs a move request, a parking report or emergency help, depending on what is happening. Do not attempt to squeeze through if you cannot judge the space. Start with safety, then choose the service responsible for that road or property.
Make one clear request
Ask the driver if they are nearby. Staff at a shop or venue may be able to announce the plate. A displayed contact number or owner-installed QR may offer another way to reach them.
Replyte lets you send a private request using the plate and issuing country. Install the app and write where the obstruction is: “Your vehicle is blocking the driveway beside number 18. Please move it when safe.” Add a photo if the entrance is hard to identify.
Phone numbers stay out of the normal exchange, but the message does not guarantee a reply. Eligible messages to unclaimed plates wait for up to 30 days and expire unless the plate is claimed. Keep using the responsible parking or property service if the driver does not answer.
Report the location, not just the plate
Take a wide photo showing the entrance, vehicle position and nearby signs. Record the address and time. Do not move, clamp or damage the other car yourself.
For illegal parking, find the relevant council or transport authority. Auckland Transport takes reports on Auckland local roads, but excludes state highways and private property. Its online route needs a MyAT account; it also accepts phone reports. Calling does not move a case ahead of an online report.
Elsewhere, use the actual council’s process. On a private site, contact the owner, manager or parking operator. Do not assume the Auckland form covers the whole country.
Pick the right Police number
Use 111 for an emergency and 105 for a non-emergency Police matter. Police also provides *555 from a mobile for urgent but non-life-threatening road incidents, including highway obstructions. It does not replace 111 and is not a general private-driveway parking line.
Tell the service how access is affected and whether anyone is in danger. Attendance and enforcement depend on the circumstances. If the driver returns, stand clear while they move and let the vehicle leave safely.
For a private request, read how to contact a driver by registration.
