How to contact a driver by licence plate in Canada

For a routine parking problem, start with a contact number or code displayed on the car. Otherwise, ask the building or parking operator to pass on a message. A licence plate helps describe the vehicle; it does not promise access to the driver’s phone number.

Record the issuing province or territory with the complete plate. Canada’s driving guide directs drivers to provincial and territorial authorities for local rules. Keep that distinction when you need an official service.

Make the request easy to pass on

A concierge does not need a long account of the dispute. Give the car’s location, colour, make, plate and province, then state the action: “Could you ask the driver to move away from the loading door?”

If you are contacting the driver directly, add enough detail to identify the entrance. Do not assume that the registered owner was the person who parked there.

Avoid posting the plate and asking strangers to identify the driver. A public accusation can reach the wrong person and is a poor way to handle an ordinary obstruction.

Use an official service when contact is not enough

Private contact cannot issue a parking penalty or arrange police attendance. In Toronto, use the Police Service’s parking-complaint route; it also lists 416-808-2222 for non-emergency contact. Elsewhere, find the municipal or police service responsible for the location.

For immediate danger, call 911. For a collision or an insurance matter, follow the instructions for the place where it happened rather than waiting for a driver to answer.

Understand the app route

A Canadian plate address needs Canada, the issuing province or territory and the complete plate.

The current Google Play app does not support plate contact for US, Canadian or Australian plates.

For supported plates, Replyte keeps phone numbers out of the conversation and requires the sender to use the app.

For a supported, eligible unclaimed plate, the message waits for up to 30 days. It reaches the account only if the plate is claimed during that window; otherwise it expires. There is no guaranteed immediate response.

If a driver has installed a contact QR code, check that it leads to the intended service and vehicle. A code on one car does not mean other cars are reachable through the same service.

If access stays blocked, follow the blocked-driveway steps for Canada. For damage, use the parked-car incident guide.

Get Replyte from Google Play. The iOS app is not available yet.
