# A car is blocking your driveway in Ireland

24 October 2026 · Checked 24 October 2026

If a car blocks your driveway, ask for the access you need without trying to move the car yourself. For a routine problem, a nearby enquiry or a private message may help. When safety or formal enforcement is involved, contact the service responsible for that location.

## Show what is blocked

Record the address, registration and time. Take a photo showing the full entrance and where the vehicle stands, rather than only a close-up of the plate. Keep the evidence for the relevant service instead of posting accusations online.

Do not attempt a tight manoeuvre if you cannot see the space around your own car. Avoid touching the other vehicle, and do not hire a tow on the assumption that public-road and private-property powers are the same.

## Ask nearby, then send a clear request

A shop or apartment reception may be able to announce the registration. If a number is displayed, you can try calling it. With Replyte, you need the app, the issuing country and the complete registration. Write the action first:

“Your car is blocking the driveway at 14 Main Street. Please move it when safe.”

Keep phone numbers out of the normal exchange and use a photo only if it helps locate the obstruction. There is no guaranteed response. An eligible message to an unclaimed registration waits for up to 30 days and expires unless it is claimed within that period.

## Find the service for the actual place

For parking on a public road, use the city or county council’s parking contact. In Dublin, the [council’s customer service](https://www.dublincity.ie/your-city-council/contact-dublin-city-council/contact-customer-services) can help you find the relevant service. A Dublin arrangement does not establish the process for Cork, Galway or another county.

On managed private land, contact the property manager or parking operator. Provide facts about blocked access and ask what they can do; do not assume they can issue a public-road penalty or arrange immediate removal.

If it is a non-emergency Garda matter, use the local station listed through the [Garda contact page](https://www.garda.ie/en/contact-us/). For an emergency, call 999 or 112. Do not wait for an app reply where someone is in danger.

## When the driver returns

Point out the blocked entrance and stand clear while they move. If the problem repeats, keep dated records and take them to the responsible council, Garda station or property manager. A single factual record is more useful than a public dispute about who owns the car.
