Someone damaged your parked car and left in Ireland
· Checked
If you return to a damaged parked car, first make sure it is safe to stand beside it. Photograph what you find and contact your insurer. If the other driver left without exchanging details, use the Garda reporting route that fits the incident.
Save the scene before it changes
Record the location and the time you discovered the damage. If you know when the car was last undamaged, note that separately. Take close and wide photographs, and save any note, witness contact or other vehicle registration.
Ask the car-park operator or nearby premises whether cameras may cover the place. Request that relevant footage be preserved; do not assume it exists or that you can obtain it directly. Keep original images and distinguish witnessed facts from guesses.
Follow the Irish collision process
Garda collision guidance explains the duties of a driver involved, including stopping and providing the required information. For property damage, if neither a Garda nor the property owner or person in charge is immediately available, the driver must give the information at a Garda station as soon as reasonably possible.
Those are duties of the person involved in the collision. If you discovered damage later, explain that to the local station and provide the evidence you have. For immediate danger or an emergency, call 999 or 112. Do not apply a UK reporting deadline to an Irish incident.
Tell your insurer what you know
Contact your insurer promptly and ask what it needs before repairs. Give the date, location, photographs, any registration and the Garda reference if one was supplied. Do not promise yourself a particular payout, excess or no-claims outcome before checking the policy.
A registration can help an enquiry, but it does not establish who drove. Avoid accusing the registered owner if you only have a vehicle description or a witness’s partial number.
Use private contact as a follow-up
If you have the registration, you can try Replyte: install the app, select the issuing country and send the time, location and a request to exchange details. Phone numbers stay out of the normal conversation. A photo can show the damage without making a public allegation.
An eligible message to an unclaimed registration waits for up to 30 days, then expires unless the car is claimed. This cannot guarantee contact, replace a Garda report or notify your insurer. Use it alongside the official steps, never as a reason to delay them.
For a follow-up request to a driver or witness, see contacting a car by registration.
Get Replyte on Google Play. The iOS app is not available yet.
